When strolling down Front Street, it’s easy to imagine what Temecula must have looked like during its earliest days. This weekend, those images become a reality when the City of Temecula’s Western Days once again brings cowboy shoot outs, hoedowns and good old fashioned country grub to the streets of Old Town.

On Saturday, May 16th and Sunday, May 17th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, western-themed entertainment, food and fun will surround visitors of this annual summer kick-off event.

To set the mood of the old west, the Old Town Temecula Gunslingers will host shoot outs and cowboy skits throughout the day, including a humorous bank robbery on the corner of Front and Main Streets at high noon on both days.

Additional entertainment includes cowgirl musician Judy Taylor on Front Street, both days from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and working cowboy, Jim Brooks, providing calf-roping lessons for aspiring young cowpokes. Brooks and his lasso will appear on Main Street from 1:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday only.

Also for the kiddos, there will be pony rides on both days as well as a loom weaver and Old Town favorite, balloon artist Dynamite Dave, both on Sunday only.

All the horsing around making you hungry? The International Chili Society Regional Cook Off will take place on both days, in the 6th Street lot at Moreno, with some of the world’s most decorated chili cooks appearing on Sunday, May 17th. Competing for over $2,000 in cash and prizes, Temecula’s Chili Cook Off winners automatically qualify for the World Championships this fall.

So grab that ten-gallon hat you picked up at the gift shop in Branson last summer and head down to Old Town for Western Days this weekend. But keep an eye out for bandits in bandanas holding up The Bank, because I doubt they are there for the margaritas.
