Can’t make it to the Kentucky Derby this year? Well, turn that frown upside down because the Temecula Valley Dachshund Club is recreating the fun and excitement of the world’s most famous four-legged race but on a slightly smaller, and furrier, scale.

The 6th Annual Wine Country Wiener Fest, presented by the Temecula Valley Dachshund Club (TVDC), invites wiener dogs, their humans and friends to Mount Palomar Winery on Sunday, May 3rd, for a celebration of man’s best sausage-shaped friend.

As a way to raise funds for the Sunny Oasis Dachshund Rescue, the TVDC has created a full day of dachshunds, complete with family games for dogs and their humans, food and drinks, local vendor booths, a silent auction and door and raffle prizes. Because it is wine country, tastings are on the schedule for the grown ups.

The main event is Dexter’s Derby Dachshund Races, where wiener dogs in four divisions – puppy, adult, senior and doxie mix – give our favorite Kentucky equine athletes a run for their money (pun intended). Humans are even encouraged to create their most elaborate hat and take part in a crazy hat contest a la the real derby weekend.

For more information on all the whole “dog” gone day, visit

So, maybe you can watch the Kentucky Derby on TV this Saturday but you can experience the racing excitement live on Sunday at the Wine Country Wiener Fest 2015.
