Read for the Win at the Library this June

School may be out but the Ronald H. Roberts Temecula Public Library is keeping your head in the game with their Read for the Win Summer Family Programs.

From June 6th through July 18th, the library’s annual tradition of encouraging summer reading through rewards continues with the return of their popular six-week summer reading program; this year with a fun sports theme and motto of “On Your Mark. Get Set. Read!”

Beginning Monday, June 6th, families with children from toddler age to grade six are encouraged to sign up their team and pledge to keep reading. Each team will be given a scorecard, which will be kept at the library, and receive a weekly stamp if one or more books are read that week. Teams are asked to keep a log of the books they read together and bring it to the library to receive their stamp.

Prizes such as bookmarks, sunglasses, paddleballs and more will be awarded to readers weekly and, at the conclusion of the six weeks, teams can turn in completed scorecards with all six stamps for a book to add to their own home library.

During your library visit, make sure to keep an eye out for this year’s reading program mascot, Readee the Referee, who will be hiding somewhere in the children and teen section of the library. Fill out a postcard with Readee’s whereabouts and you will be entered to win a weekly prize.

Also for the kids, June at the library means the return of the free weekly family shows, held each Wednesday at 10:30 am.

On June 8th, the Noteworthy Puppets Presents Sherlock Homerun: A Whodunnit Puppet Musical. World-famous detective, Sherlock Homerun and his bilingual soccer ball sidekick, Watson, try to solve a wacky musical mystery and save the Summer Games.

Break out those old Nintendo’s because, on Wednesday, June 15th, the library presents Super Arty-O-World; a videogame themed variety show complete with magic, music, puppets, juggling and more.

On June 22nd, Buster Balloon presents Kaboom: the Balloon Game Show, where participants are invited to match wits with their host in trivia and physical challenges, all while having fun with balloons.

Last year’s family favorite, the Swazzle Puppets, return on June 29th for a fun and musical retelling of the classic fable, the Tortoise and the Hare, teaching the audience the importance of trying hard and doing your best.

Wednesday family shows fill up very fast. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and carpool, if possible.

June also has not one but two programs for the 7th through 12th grade crowd. On Monday, June 6th, Knockout Henna Tattoos gives teens the opportunity to celebrate the start of swimsuit season with their own henna or glitter tattoos. In keeping with June’s theme, on June 13th, teens can design and decorate their own sports bag.

Teen programs are limited to 40 participants. Reservations can be made two weeks prior to the event by calling (951) 693-8900 or by stopping by the library reference desk.

The kids and teen programs are only a handful of the exciting activities at the library in June; with special events targeting everyone from babies to seniors.
