If Quinn Fabray’s car accident on “Glee” wasn’t enough to make your teen stop texting while driving, the Promenade Temecula is offering the perfect opportunity to inform new drivers of the hazards of using a cell phone while behind the wheel.

Promenade Temecula has partnered with Southwest Healthcare System to present their annual Teen Expo on Saturday, April 18th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the outdoor plaza. This year’s expo will focus on educating teenagers on safe driving habits.

“A recent survey by PEW Research Center showed that one out of three drivers ages 16 to 17 years old have texted while driving and 52 percent of these teens admitting to talking on their phones while driving,” Kym Espinosa, Director of Marketing for Promenade Temecula, said. “These driving distractions are increasingly creating crash risks, injuries and deaths every year across the country.”

Helping to organize this year’s expo are the members of the Teen Leadership Council, which is an opportunity for high school and college students to develop business skills through real-life project experience. Students in the program engage in leadership roles in research, marketing, event planning, and data analysis for various community projects throughout the semester. The expo will not only include driver safety information but also demonstrations by the California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire, Teen Road to Safety and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) exhibits.

Though the purpose is educational, the afternoon does have quite a bit of fun thrown in with pro scooter rider demonstrations, including safety information, and a performance and autograph session with the popular motocross stunt team, Metal Mulisha.

In addition to the exhibitions, demonstrations, activities and vendors, the event will also provide opportunities for guests to enjoy live music and participate in a number of free giveaways.

So, send your teenager a text message and let them know that you’ll be taking them to the Promenade Temecula this Saturday to see the Metal Mulisha do a few jumps and let them discover the driver safety information on their own. They’re kind of independent at this age.
